Light My Path

May 4th, 2006

I say I’m waiting on You
But maybe You’re waiting on me too
And You wait for me today
To take the next step of faith

I once heard a preacher say
I limit You Most High when I disobey
O Lord let me not delay
To do all the good You say

You light my path
One step at a time
Your Word’s a lamp
I’ll run where it shines

I can’t see ahead too far
But I have Your truth hidden in my heart
So my next step will be sure
As according to Your Word

You light my path
One step at a time
Your Word’s a lamp
I’ll run where it shines

I’m walking the path
Of all Your commands
Taking each step that You have planned
I’m running the course

That You’ve laid before
I believe You are the reward
You’re lighting the way
Like the sun in its strength

Brighter unto the perfect day
You’re leading me home
To the glories unknown
But until then O Lord You’ve shown

You light my path
One step at a time
Your Word’s a lamp
I’ll run where it shines

Tracknotes

This is the last song Ty and I wrote before coming to Compass Bible Church. For a long time we had been praying that God would guide us where He wanted us to go. As we were finishing this song the answer came! It is a celebration of the fact that God lights our path one step at a time. This comes from Psalm 119:105. We were also inspired to put this verse into song by Maynard Sager’s Christmas Poem “One Step at a Time.” The second verse is a reference to a Martyn Lloyd-Jones sermon we read about limiting the Most High in a book called Seeking the Face of God.

    T.Sag and Bobby—

Your podcast is clutch. I was so encouraged by this song this morning as I got ready for work. What a great reminder of the joyful confidence we have that God’s ways are satisfying and sure, even when the world looks so attractive.

So cool to see the songs getting better and better. I can still hear the Travis influence. Remember when we saw them at Universal :)

I am thinking about flying to LA for a while at the end of June. Will you guys be in the OC by then? If so, I’ll try to come down and sing high harmonies with you like the old days. I’m excited for you guys to continue as brothers in ministry in a new place and hope to see you soon. Thanks for encouraging me to stay on the path.

This last weekend Maynard and I went to a leadership conference at Flood. The guest speaker was Paul Johnson. One of his scriptures stood out as I listened to your song. Galatians 5:25 “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” He said the step is like a ballerina’s steps—choreographed and precise. And then in MacArthur’s commentary it says. “The Greek verb “walk” (NKJV) or “step” (NIV) indicates a continuous action, or a habitual lifestyle. Walking also implies progress; as a believer submits to the Spirit’s control—that is, responds in obedience to the simple commands of Scripture—he grows in his spiritual life.
